Liverpool and Man Utd Monitor Newcastle Star Malick Thiaw

Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly tracking Newcastle United defender Malick Thiaw, according to CaughtOffside, with both clubs weighing up defensive reinforcements for future windows.

The Germany international joined Newcastle from AC Milan in August 2025 for a fee in the region of £35m and has quickly become a key figure under Eddie Howe. His physicality, aerial dominance and comfort playing out from the back have made him a standout performer in the Premier League.

Sources close to the situation say no formal talks have taken place, but scouts from both Merseyside and Old Trafford have been watching his progress closely.

Why Liverpool Are Interested

With Virgil van Dijk’s contract situation growing uncertain as he edges towards the twilight of his career, Liverpool are said to be exploring long-term options at centre-back. Thiaw’s profile fits the mould of a commanding, ball-playing defender who could eventually slot into Arne Slot’s back line.

Man Utd’s Defensive Concerns

United, meanwhile, face question marks over Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt, all of whom have battled fitness and form issues. Thiaw’s experience could offer stability while young defenders like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven continue developing.

Newcastle, however, are in no rush to sell. With Thiaw contracted until 2029, the Magpies could demand upwards of £65m-£70m — a hefty premium on his estimated £40m market value.

Personally, I’d argue Liverpool have the more pressing need here, given Van Dijk’s advancing years, though a £70m price tag might make either club think twice before committing.

Both sides are in Champions League action this week, with Liverpool facing Atlético Madrid and United travelling to face Sabah.
