Chelsea Eye January Move for Fulham Star Sander Berge After Failed Deadline Day Bid

Chelsea’s search for fresh central midfield options is far from over, with reports suggesting the Blues could return for Fulham’s Sander Berge when the January transfer window opens.

The west London club made a late attempt to sign the Norwegian before the summer deadline, but Fulham stood firm and rejected any approach, according to BBC Sport. The move came as Chelsea braced themselves for Enzo Fernández’s departure, with the Argentine sealing a big-money switch to Manchester City.

Berge, who impressed for Norway at the World Cup, has continued to shine for Fulham this season. Manchester United also monitored him over the summer before opting to bring in Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans instead. Journalist Laurie Whitwell suggested United would have needed around £40million to prise him away from Craven Cottage — a fee Chelsea may now have to match in the new year.

Berge Could Solve Chelsea’s Midfield Problem

With Fernández gone, Chelsea’s midfield options look thin. Moisés Caicedo is currently sidelined through injury, while Romeo Lavia has repeatedly struggled with fitness since his move from Southampton. That shortage was evident during Chelsea’s recent clash with Arsenal, where they lacked the physical edge needed to dominate the centre of the park.

Berge could plug that gap nicely. Strong in the air, powerful in duels, and comfortable driving forward with the ball, he offers a blend of steel and composure that Chelsea’s engine room has missed.

At 28, he’s arguably playing the best football of his career. A January reunion between the two clubs wouldn’t be a surprise — and for Chelsea, it might just be the signing that steadies their midfield for the second half of the season.
