Liverpool Eye January Move for Barcelona Left-Back Alejandro Balde in £34m Deal

Reds Plan Defensive Overhaul

Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a January approach for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde as they look to strengthen a defence that has come under scrutiny this term. The criticism intensified after Manchester City’s 3-0 win at Anfield, which handed Arne Slot’s side their first Premier League defeat of the campaign.

According to El Nacional, a new left-back is high on the Merseyside club’s winter agenda, with Balde identified as the main target when the window opens in 2027.

Why Balde Could Leave Camp Nou

The 23-year-old remained at Barcelona following summer speculation, but game time has been hard to come by. Hansi Flick has tended to favour Gerard Martin and Joao Cancelo on the left side of defence, leaving Balde with plenty to prove.

Barcelona’s well-documented financial constraints could also work in Liverpool’s favour. El Nacional suggests the La Liga champions would consider a sale, with a fee of around £34m mentioned.

How Balde Compares With Kerkez

Milos Kerkez arrived from Bournemouth to succeed Andy Robertson, who departed as a free agent in the summer. However, the Hungarian has struggled to make an impact going forward and within Liverpool’s system.

Balde offers pace, strong recovery running and tidy distribution from the back. He delivers dangerous crosses and is comfortable in an inverted role, something Kerkez has found difficult and which has affected his understanding with the left winger.

Our Opinion

At £34m, Balde looks like decent value for a player of his pedigree and age. Still, with Barcelona unlikely to sell cheaply and rivals sure to monitor his situation, Liverpool may need to move quickly. Whether Kerkez gets more time to settle will also shape their thinking.
