Man Utd Eye £85m Newcastle Defender Lewis Hall as Carrick Tackles Left-Back Crisis

Hall Remains on United’s Radar

Manchester United are still interested in Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, according to journalist Dean Jones. Writing for Flashscore, Jones says Luke Shaw’s continuing fitness concerns have prompted the club to consider reinforcements in that area.

United first showed interest in the England international last summer, but Newcastle held firm. The Magpies have since tied Hall down to a new deal running until 2031, which strengthens their negotiating position. Any suitor could now be asked to pay upwards of £85m (€100m).

Carrick Under Pressure

Michael Carrick was handed the permanent job after steering United to a third-placed finish and Champions League qualification. This season, however, has been far tougher. Just six points from six league games and only two wins from nine in all competitions have left the manager under growing scrutiny.

Injury Problems at Left-Back

Defensive options are thin. Patrick Dorgu is expected to miss several weeks after a hamstring injury suffered on Denmark duty, while Noussair Mazraoui is also sidelined. Ayden Heaven was even used at left-back against Atlético Madrid.

Our Opinion

Hall is proven in the Premier League and still has plenty of room to develop, so he looks a sensible long-term investment. Even so, £85m is a huge sum for a full-back, and Newcastle appear in no mood to sell. It will be fascinating to see whether United test their resolve in January or wait until next summer.
