Tottenham Eye January Move for Sporting CP Winger Geny Catamo

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a January swoop for Sporting CP’s Mozambique international Geny Catamo, with the 25-year-old attracting interest from across Europe.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, relayed by Sport Witness, Serie A side Como have emerged as front-runners for the winger after lodging a formal approach. Sunderland and unnamed Saudi Arabian clubs are also credited with interest, while Spurs are said to be monitoring the situation closely, though there’s no indication yet that they’ve made their move.

Catamo’s Rise at Sporting CP

Catamo’s journey began in Mozambique before he moved through the ranks in Portugal, eventually breaking into Sporting’s first team during the 2023/24 campaign. Last season, he contributed eight goals and five assists across 47 appearances in all competitions, a solid return for a wide player. He’s started this term even more sharply, netting twice and setting up three more in just six matches, form that has understandably caught the eye of several suitors.

Would Catamo Suit Tottenham’s Attack?

Spurs have reportedly admired Catamo for a number of seasons now, and the timing makes sense. Savio, signed from Manchester City in the summer, has looked tidy without offering much end product, while Dejan Kulusevski’s injury troubles and Mohammed Kudus’s patchy form have left question marks over Tottenham’s wide options.

Personally, I think Catamo’s directness and willingness to run in behind could give Thomas Frank’s side a sharper edge on the right, something that’s been missing at times this season. It’s also worth noting that Tottenham’s lack of European football this term, following a difficult first half of the campaign, could work against them compared to Como’s Serie A pull. Even so, Spurs’ financial muscle should keep them firmly in contention if they decide to formalise their interest come January.
