Liverpool are reportedly expected to make a move for Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana, according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri.
Following a successful debut campaign under Arne Slot—where Liverpool clinched the Premier League title—the Reds are now backing their new manager in the transfer market. This summer, the club has already splashed the cash, bringing in Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez, with Hugo Ekitike’s move from PSG also close to completion. If that deal goes through, Liverpool’s total spend could surpass £270 million.
Liverpool Eye Fofana as Chiesa’s Replacement
As Liverpool shift focus to outgoings, several high-profile names are being linked with exits. Darwin Núñez could be on his way out, while Bayern Munich are pushing hard to sign Luis Díaz—with the Colombian reportedly open to the switch. Federico Chiesa is also expected to depart after a frustrating season under Slot, with a return to Italy on the cards.
With Chiesa’s exit imminent, Tavolieri reports that Liverpool have identified 20-year-old Fofana as a priority target to bolster their attacking options. The Belgian winger, currently valued at around £26 million by Transfermarkt, is under contract with Lyon until 2028, making any potential deal a costly one.
Lyon’s Financial Woes Could Force a Sale
Lyon recently avoided relegation following a financial fair play scandal, but they remain under pressure to balance the books. Having already sold Rayan Cherki earlier this summer, they may be open to offers for Fofana.
A technically gifted left winger with immense potential, Fofana could be a smart long-term signing for the Reds. However, with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo already competing for attacking roles, regular minutes at Anfield might be a challenge.
Still, if Liverpool do make a formal move, Fofana could be a name to watch in the Premier League next season.
