According to BBC, the deal is understood to be worth in the region of £27million, plus add-ons with a four-year contract with the option for a further year within the agreement.
The England international has long been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford as an ideal replacement for Patrice Evra.
The left-back becomes the second summer signing of the Red Devils after the arrival of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.
These two back-to-back signings are a signal of desperation from United as they look to bolster their squad ahead of next season.
The 18-year-old defender has established himself as one of the hottest prospects in English football during his tenure at St Mary’s, has made 67 appearances for the Saints since playing his debut in 2012.
