Man Utd Eye £19m Leeds Striker as Carrick Seeks January Firepower

Michael Carrick weighs move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin amid faltering United attack

Manchester United have endured a torrid start to the 2026/27 campaign, managing just one Premier League victory from five matches heading into the international break, and they have already exited the Carabao Cup.

Despite the poor run, there is little indication that Michael Carrick’s position is under threat. If anything, the club appear ready to back their head coach with fresh attacking reinforcements come January.

According to Football Insider, United have registered an interest in Leeds United forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, one of the Premier League’s more experienced number nines, who has already netted three goals this term. Transfermarkt places his valuation at around £19 million, though at 29 years old, Leeds would likely demand a premium for a player they consider central to their plans, having brought him in on a free transfer from Everton last summer.

Why Calvert-Lewin makes sense for United

Leeds sit fifth in the table and remain unbeaten, so their reluctance to sell their leading marksman is understandable. Still, form and circumstance can shift quickly in January.

Personally, I think Calvert-Lewin would be an astute addition. His aerial threat, clever movement and finishing instincts inside the box, paired with genuine industry off the ball, are exactly the qualities United’s forward line has lacked.

Benjamin Šeško has struggled for rhythm this season, while Matheus Cunha has looked far more effective drifting from the left than leading the line centrally. That imbalance points to United needing a recognised centre-forward sooner rather than later.

Given his history at Everton and now Leeds, a move to Old Trafford in the prime of his career would likely appeal to Calvert-Lewin too — particularly if United can offer Champions League football as an incentive. Whether Leeds can be prised into a sale remains the real question.
