Manchester United Eye Lecce’s Tiago Gabriel as Potential Leny Yoro Alternative

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Lecce centre-back Tiago Gabriel as Leny Yoro’s long-term future at Old Trafford grows increasingly uncertain.

Yoro’s Old Trafford Role Under Scrutiny

Yoro joined United from Lille in a deal worth over £50 million in the summer of 2024, quickly establishing himself as a regular starter under Ruben Amorim. Since Amorim’s exit in January, however, Michael Carrick has leaned towards more experienced defensive options, limiting the Frenchman’s game time.

This season, Yoro has started just two matches — in the Champions League and League Cup — with two further Premier League appearances arriving from the bench. Across the calendar year, he has made only seven league starts, a sharp decline for a player once viewed as a defensive cornerstone.

Matters could worsen further once Matthijs de Ligt returns from injury, handing Carrick another senior centre-back to pair alongside Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez, potentially squeezing Yoro out of contention entirely.

Gabriel Emerges on United’s Radar

Amid this uncertainty, 21-year-old Portugal Under-21 international Tiago Gabriel has caught United’s attention. The Lecce defender has been a near-ever-present in Serie A this term and offers a younger alternative should the club’s defensive plans shift.

Gabriel is tied to Lecce until 2030, meaning any move would likely require a significant fee and patience from suitors. United, though, are said to remain admirers of his progress.

In my view, this looks more like sensible squad planning than an imminent replacement plan. Yoro remains a talented young defender, and clubs regularly monitor emerging centre-backs without any transfer being close. Carrick’s selection choices this season suggest experience is currently being prioritised over potential — but that balance could easily tip back in Yoro’s favour with a run of form. Gabriel’s situation is one worth watching, not one to overreact to just yet.
