Liverpool Eye £51.5m January Move for AZ Alkmaar Midfielder Kees Smit

Liverpool are considering a winter approach for AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit, after the Reds reportedly watched the youngster in AZ’s Europa League clash with Sunderland.

Liverpool Monitor Kees Smit Ahead of Winter Window

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool were tracking the 20-year-old during AZ’s European opener earlier this week. The Reds enjoyed a busy summer, adding Bradley Barcola, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz, yet a new central midfielder now appears to be the next priority.

Smit has been a long-term target at Anfield, and a package worth around £51.5m is reportedly enough to convince AZ to sell at the turn of the year.

Why Kees Smit Suits Liverpool’s Midfield Plans

The Dutchman is comfortable in several roles, featuring as a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and, on occasion, a holding player. He is admired for his creativity and work rate, and he has already provided two assists in six appearances this season.

He could also be viewed as a successor to Curtis Jones, who joined Inter Milan permanently in the summer. Liverpool did not sign a direct replacement, so January may offer a chance to fill that gap.

Chelsea, Tottenham and Aston Villa Also Interested

Liverpool are not alone in the chase, with Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa all named among his admirers. The Blues could prove the toughest competition after failing to replace Enzo Fernandez, who departed on deadline day, 1 September.

Would Smit Get Enough Game Time at Anfield?

Regular football is not guaranteed. Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch would all sit ahead of him, so a rotational role is the likely starting point if he makes the move.

In our opinion, £51.5m is a hefty sum for a player still developing, but Smit’s versatility and ceiling make him a sensible long-term investment, provided Liverpool are patient with his progress.
