Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a shock reunion with former academy graduate Dennis Cirkin, as the North London club look to reinforce their left-back options this summer.
According to transfer expert Sébastien Vidal, Spurs are preparing an official bid to bring the 23-year-old Sunderland defender back to the club—three years after letting him leave.
From Spurs Academy to Championship Star
Cirkin, who came through Tottenham’s youth ranks, made the switch to Sunderland in 2021 and has since blossomed into a key player for the Black Cats. Last season, he was instrumental in their promotion campaign, racking up 39 appearances across all competitions and earning plaudits for his consistency and composure.
The England U21 international has now caught the attention of his former employers, with Vidal reporting that Spurs are planning a formal approach. Though Tottenham had a buy-back clause when they sold Cirkin, that clause has expired, meaning they’ll need to negotiate directly with Sunderland this time around.
A £6m Deal in the Works
Per Transfermarkt, Cirkin is currently valued at £6 million—a figure well within reach for a Premier League club. With Destiny Udogie the only recognised left-back at the club, Spurs boss Thomas Frank is eager to add depth ahead of the new season.
Djed Spence has filled in during Udogie’s absence, but he’s a natural right-back. Ben Davies, meanwhile, is now mainly used as a centre-half, and Sergio Reguilón is expected to leave this summer. That leaves Spurs thin on options down the left flank.
Can Cirkin Make the Step Up?
Jumping from the Championship to the Premier League is no easy feat—but it’s far from impossible. The likes of Andy Robertson, Antoine Semenyo, and even Djed Spence have shown that the transition can work with the right setup and development.
Cirkin could be the latest to follow that path—and with Spurs looking to inject fresh energy into their defence, this could be a smart, long-term move for the club.
