Chelsea Plot Defensive Reinforcement Under Xabi Alonso
Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a move for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, according to TEAMtalk. Xabi Alonso, appointed this summer after a disappointing campaign, has favoured a back three, and the Blues appear keen to bolster their options on the right side of defence.

Fitness concerns have hampered Wesley Fofana since his arrival from Leicester City, while Reece James and Malo Gusto have often been deployed in midfield roles. Josh Acheampong remains in the mix, but Chelsea seem eager to add quality for next year.
A Long-Standing Admirer
TEAMtalk claim the west Londoners have followed Kounde closely for some time. They were interested before he joined Barcelona from Sevilla in 2022, though the Frenchman ultimately opted for the Camp Nou.
Now, he is finding minutes harder to come by under Hansi Flick. Barcelona are said to be open to cashing in next year, despite his contract running until 2030. Intermediaries have reportedly begun sounding out potential suitors.
Competition from Rival Clubs
Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign the 27-year-old, although the arrival of Ronald Araujo from Barcelona could dampen their interest. Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal have also been informed of his possible availability in 2027, while Bayern Munich are understood to be admirers.
Crucially, the report suggests Kounde himself would prefer a switch to Stamford Bridge.
Why Kounde Makes Sense
Valued at around £51m by Transfermarkt, the versatile right-footed defender is comfortable at right-back or centre-back. Conor Bradley’s injury problems may prompt Liverpool to look at right-sided cover, while Diogo Dalot’s inconsistency could push United towards a replacement.
Our Take
Kounde’s flexibility would suit Alonso’s system perfectly, and his reported preference for Chelsea gives the Blues a genuine edge. However, with several Premier League heavyweights circling, Barcelona may be tempted to start an auction. Chelsea will need to move decisively if they want to land him.
