Chelsea and Liverpool Battle for Alessandro Bastoni: Inter Star Eyed in £70m Transfer Race

Premier League Giants Circle Inter Milan Defender

Chelsea and Liverpool are reportedly locked in a contest for Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni, according to TEAMtalk. The 27-year-old Italy international is attracting serious attention across Europe, with a move to England now firmly on the table for 2027.

Who Is Alessandro Bastoni?

Bastoni arrived at Inter from Atalanta in 2017 and progressed through the youth ranks, shining at Under-17 and Under-19 level. Loan stints at Atalanta and Parma gave him senior experience before his Inter debut in 2019.

Since then, he has become central to one of the most successful periods in the Nerazzurri’s recent history. His honours include three Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia wins and three Supercoppa Italiana triumphs. He has also started all five league games this term, following a key role in last season’s Scudetto success.

Why Chelsea Want Bastoni

The report suggests Chelsea admire his defensive and technical qualities, particularly in a back three. That profile would suit Xabi Alonso’s tactical approach at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool’s Post-Van Dijk Plans

Liverpool, meanwhile, are said to be assessing several centre-backs as they plan for life after Virgil van Dijk. Bastoni, who stands at 6ft 2in, has reportedly been subject to extensive checks by Anfield recruiters.

Barcelona Preference and Inter’s Valuation

Bastoni is said to prefer a move to Barcelona in the summer. However, intermediaries have reportedly told both English clubs he would also be open to joining the Premier League.

Inter are under no pressure to sell, though TEAMtalk claims they could listen to offers around £70m. Manchester City are also understood to be admirers, which adds another layer of competition.

Our Take: Is Bastoni Worth £70m?

Former Inter boss Simone Inzaghi has described him as “world-class”, and his trophy-laden résumé backs that up. Left-sided ball-playing centre-backs of his calibre rarely become available, so £70m feels fair in the current market.

The real question is whether Barcelona’s pull proves too strong. If it does, Chelsea and Liverpool may need to look elsewhere. Should the Premier League clubs stay in the hunt, though, this could be one of the most compelling transfer sagas of 2027.
