Southampton are reportedly preparing an £8million bid to sign Lazio midfielder Alvaro Gonzalez in order to reinforce the squad before the close of the transfer window, according to Daily Mirror.
Gonzalez, 29, could become the latest signing at the St Mary’s as the Saints manager Ronald Koeman is eying an £8m bid for the Uruguayan international, who featured in all four matches at the 2014 World Cup tournament.
Despite receiving around to £100million from off-loading their star players this summer, Koeman has only spent £47million and is still looking to add a few more players to his ranks.
The Mirror quotes Koeman as saying, “We are still looking to sign one or two more players including a winger.”
The Lazio midfielder has made 109 appearances in all competition last season, who is usually played as a central or right midfielder with his versatility.
Gonzalez could be used as a replacement for Calum Chambers, who left the club for Arsenal.
