Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Barcelona midfielder Gavi next year, despite a summer of heavy investment in the middle of the park, according to Spanish outlet El Nacional.

Why Manchester United Want More Midfield Depth
Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans all arrived at Old Trafford during the recent window, yet the club’s midfield overhaul appears unfinished. El Nacional claims United still want greater depth and quality in the engine room, and Gavi has emerged as a target.
Gavi’s Situation at Barcelona
The 22-year-old has struggled with fitness and has found playing time limited under Hansi Flick. His contract runs until June 2030, but he is reportedly valued at only £21 million. His injury record means Barcelona are unlikely to command a much higher fee, and United see a chance to land a high-potential player at a modest price.
What Gavi Would Bring to United
Gavi was part of the Spain squad that lifted the World Cup this summer, and his talent is not in question. At just 5ft 8in, he wins his fair share of duels and is aggressive in the tackle. He also makes regular interceptions and clearances to win the ball back.
On the ball, he is comfortable in tight spaces and rarely flustered by pressure. His short and through passes help his side move play forward, making him a capable central midfielder.
PSG Provide Competition
United may not have a clear run at him. El Nacional reports that Paris Saint-Germain are also keen, and that Gavi is leaning towards a move to the French capital.
Our Take
A midfielder with Gavi’s pedigree at £21 million looks like smart business on paper, but the injury concerns are the obvious risk. United already have several recent signings to integrate, so it is fair to ask whether another midfielder is the priority. The player’s reported preference for PSG could also prove the biggest obstacle, whatever fee is agreed.
