United’s Midfield Search Continues
Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume as a cheaper alternative to Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
After strengthening their attack with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, United have turned their focus to bolstering midfield options under Ruben Amorim.
Baleba was initially identified as the top target, but Brighton’s £115m asking price has forced United to look elsewhere after already spending nearly £200m this summer. With a new goalkeeper also on the agenda, United are now exploring more cost-effective signings.
Agoume Among Alternatives on Shortlist
Alongside Mikel Jauregizar, Javi Guerra, Angelo Stiller, Lamine Camara and Morten Hjulmand, Agoume has emerged as a serious candidate.
Standing at 6ft 2in, the Frenchman offers the athleticism Amorim craves. He is quick across the ground, strong in the air, and capable of handling possession under pressure – while also excelling in defensive duties.
Valued at just £7m by Transfermarkt and contracted until 2028, Agoume would represent a far more affordable option than Baleba.
Why Agoume Fits United’s System
Although Sevilla endured a disappointing campaign last term, Agoume showed flashes of his potential and earned a place in France’s U21 European Championship squad this summer. At just 23, he still has room to grow and could be moulded into the type of midfield anchor Amorim wants at Old Trafford.
However, the Premier League’s physical demands may require an adjustment period for the Frenchman if United push through with the deal.
The Decision Ahead
Agoume isn’t the only dynamic midfielder on the radar – Lamine Camara is another name strongly admired, with his all-round qualities resembling those of Baleba.
With the new Premier League season kicking off against Arsenal on Sunday, United will be eager to resolve their midfield situation quickly. The question is whether they gamble on Agoume’s potential or pursue a more established option before the transfer window closes.
