Manchester United are reportedly drawing up plans to overhaul their backline in 2027, with Michael Carrick said to be uneasy about the options currently at his disposal, according to Football Insider.

Why Manchester United Need New Defenders
United’s shaky start to the Premier League season has put their defensive frailties under the spotlight. Carrick’s men have collected just one win from their opening five league fixtures, and a lack of solidity at the back has been a recurring theme.
The Red Devils reportedly failed to fix several problem positions over the summer, and the club are now said to be preparing for the next transfer windows with defence a clear priority.
Left-Back Depth a Major Worry
Left-back looks the most pressing area. United have long sought a credible rival and backup for Luke Shaw, particularly as Patrick Dorgu is increasingly deployed in a more advanced wide role. That leaves Shaw as the only senior specialist on that side, raising questions about both depth and durability across a gruelling campaign.
Centre-Back Options Also Under Review
The situation at centre-half is also being assessed. Harry Maguire’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, while Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt have both been hampered by injuries and could depart next summer.
United have already reshaped their attack in 2025 and their midfield in 2026, so the defence appears to be the next logical stage of a wider rebuild aimed at creating a more balanced squad.
January or Summer Business?
The club are reportedly reluctant to spend heavily in January on their preferred high-profile targets and are prepared to wait until the summer if the right deals do not materialise. Even so, a winter addition remains possible should a suitable player become available at the right price.
Is Waiting Until Summer Too Risky for Man United?
Waiting until the summer is a gamble. With results already below expectations, another half-season of defensive uncertainty could damage United’s hopes of a top-four push. A January left-back, even on loan, would make sense, and it would give Carrick a much-needed option while longer-term centre-back targets are identified.
