Liverpool Eye Shock Return for Tyler Morton in £26m Transfer Twist

Reds Monitor Former Academy Man at Lyon

Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a sensational return for Tyler Morton, with the midfielder attracting interest from his boyhood club after impressing at Olympique Lyonnais, according to TEAMtalk.

The 23-year-old rose through Liverpool’s academy and earned his senior bow in 2021, though regular first-team opportunities proved hard to come by at Anfield. Loan spells followed as he sought consistent game time before sealing a permanent switch to the Groupama Stadium last year.

His maiden campaign in Ligue 1 was a success, contributing five goal involvements across 29 outings and helping Lyon secure continental football. He has kept that momentum going this term, playing a key role as Lyon sit second in the table, just two points adrift of leaders AS Monaco.

Merseyside Giants Face Stiff Competition

TEAMtalk suggests Liverpool are eyeing midfield reinforcements for next year and have kept tabs on Morton’s progress as a result. Arne Slot’s side aren’t alone in their admiration, though, with Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Sunderland, Newcastle and Everton all credited with interest.

Morton, who still has until 2030 remaining on his Lyon contract, is currently valued around £26m by Transfermarkt, giving the French outfit strong leverage in any negotiations. Liverpool reportedly retain a 20 percent sell-on clause from his original departure.

Standing at 6ft 1in and predominantly a defensive midfielder, Morton can also operate in a box-to-box capacity. He’s composed on the ball, switches play effectively over distance, and remains disciplined defensively.

With Curtis Jones having departed for Inter Milan, Liverpool’s midfield now features Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni. Endo has drifted out of favour, while Nyoni remains a developing prospect, leaving room for fresh quality.

Personally, a reunion feels logical given Morton’s trajectory and Liverpool’s existing financial stake — though prising him from a Champions League-chasing Lyon side won’t come cheap.
