Liverpool close in on Bayern Munich star Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool are reportedly planning a summer bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, according to reliable Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten.

The versatile midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the Reds for some time because of a limited opportunity he got under Pep Guardiola last season.

The Swiss international joined the Bavarians two years ago from Basle, who scored six goals in 17 games in the Bundesliga last season.

It is understood that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to rebuild his squad with more attacking flair to his team and Shaqiri seem to be the ideal option – who can operate in a number of positions.

The Merseysiders are keen admirers of Shaqiri, who is under contract until June 2016 and a move for the 22-year-old would be a cheaper alternative to Southampton’s Adam Lallana.
