Cristian Chivu is reportedly keen to bring Calvin Bassey to Inter Milan, with the Nerazzurri monitoring the Nigerian international’s contract situation at Fulham.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Inter Milan have identified Bassey as a defensive target under new boss Chivu, with the club aware that his current deal runs until 2027. Fulham are said to be alert to the growing interest, though they retain an option to extend his contract by a further year.
Bassey has become one of the Premier League’s most dependable centre-backs since his £21 million move from Ajax in 2023. Craven Cottage chiefs are understood to be pleased with his development and recognise that his contract status could soon attract suitors from across Europe.
Born in Aosta to Nigerian parents, Bassey came through Leicester City’s academy before spells at Rangers and Ajax preceded his switch to Fulham, where he has racked up 105 appearances. At 26, a move to a Champions League club would represent a logical next step.
Why Inter Milan Could Move for Bassey
Chivu’s interest is not new — Inter were credited with scouting Bassey as far back as January 2026. Having already added John Stones on a free transfer this summer, further defensive investment suggests Inter view Bassey as either genuine competition for Alessandro Bastoni or valuable squad depth as their rebuild continues.
Fulham’s Contract Dilemma
Fulham face a decision before the January window opens. Triggering their one-year extension option would push Bassey into the final year of his deal, potentially strengthening their negotiating hand rather than weakening it, since it delays any anxiety around losing him for nothing.
My view is Fulham would be sensible to secure that extension immediately. Letting his situation drift risks handing Inter — or any rival — additional leverage, and £21 million looks like value for a player of his consistency were a sale ever to happen.
