The England international has now put pen to a paper on a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until the age of 36.
“Jermain is one of the greatest goalscorers in the history of the Premier League and is a player that every manager would want to have in their team,” manager Sam Allardyce told the club’s official website.
“He proved that beyond doubt last season by scoring 15 league goals, he is in fantastic physical condition and we are very pleased that we have been able to extend his stay with us.”
Defoe has racked up 53 appearances and scored 22 goals since joining Sunderland from Toronto FC in 2014.
