Arsenal have reportedly made contact with Sporting Lisbon left-back Maxi Araujo, with Portuguese outlet Record claiming the Gunners have already held talks with the player’s representative. But before the Emirates faithful get too excited, let’s pump the brakes.
Why Araujo Is on Arteta’s Radar
The 26-year-old Uruguayan didn’t just catch the eye during the Champions League quarter-final ties against Arsenal — he made life genuinely difficult for the Gunners. Araujo won 10 duels and registered 7 tackles in the first leg alone, getting the better of both Noni Madueke and Max Dowman on multiple occasions. That’s the kind of performance that puts you firmly on a manager’s wishlist.
His release clause sits at £80 million, though Record suggest he could be available for closer to £52 million — a fee that feels more realistic, if still significant.
The Complications Are Obvious
Here’s the problem: Arsenal already have Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapie, and the highly-rated Myles Lewis-Skelly competing for the left-back berth. Hincapie has increasingly displaced Calafiori this season, and his loan option is widely expected to be triggered permanently.
That’s already a crowded picture — spending £52 million on yet another left-back would make little footballing or financial sense.
